You go to the bathroom several times a day, so you might think you know very well what you do there. But this need not be the case, because there are many things you do wrong.
Here are the five most common mistakes and ways in which they can be corrected.
You Sit on The Toilet Too Long
If you spend two minutes longer because of reading or checking Facebook (come on, we all do), it is not a big deal. But if you take so much that you cramp up your feet, you run the risk of hemorrhoids – painful, swollen veins in the anus, which can bleed. “If you have a constipation, you better stand up, walk and go back later,” says gastroenterologist Anish Sheth, adding: “The walk can stimulate the intestine to get things moving down there, and it can also help you relax.”
You Wipe Too Much
Speaking of wiping, less is more. And not just because you will spend less on toilet paper. “Excessive wiping can irritate the perianal skin and cause small abrasions which may result in inflammation and itching,” says Sheth. If you wipe one or two times, it will be quite enough. If you are still not all clean, it may be that you have a constipation. In this case, increase the intake of water and fiber to prevent hemorrhoids. If you still need more paper, consider switching to children’s wet wipes or wet toilet paper.
Using Hand Dryers
They could also be called bacteria dispensers! The latest research from the UK showed that new, powerful hand dryers spread 27 times more microbes than paper towels and almost five times more bacteria than a warm, old hand dryers. Scientists discovered bacteria in the air around the hand dryer 15 minutes after use. It is a much better option to opt for paper towels and as soon as you leave the public toilets.
You Wipe The Wrong Way
This is something you do since you got out of diapers, but you may not have perfected the knowledge yet. “Always wipe from front to back. Because wiping in the opposite direction can bring bacteria from the rectum to the urinary tract and increase the chances of urinary infection, “says gynecologist Alyssa Dweck. Because the urethra in women is relatively short, bacteria can easily travel to the bladder and in no time you will be tormented with painful inflammation.
You’re Too Clean Down There
Just because there are products that would make your female parts smell like flowers, it does not mean that you have to use. The vagina should not be overly cleaned and ‘scrubbed’ with soaps, agents, sprays and wipes, because all they can do is disrupt the pH balance and cause itching, irritation and rash. Simply wash with mild soap while bathing or showering, and the only additional tool you can use is a hair dryer if you want to dry out the excessive moisture.
