Popcorn is often associated with healthy food full with nutritive ingredients. Due to this belief, most people buy popcorn as a substitute for chips and other snacks full with carbs, fat and sugar. Nevertheless, do you know how healthy popcorn really is? Have you ever asked the question what else except popcorn might be in it?
The popcorn, which is usually sold in the markets as instant microwave popcorn, or the popcorn sold in movie theaters is most likely to be pre treated with many insecticides, herbicides, pesticides and other dangerous chemicals, which may harm your health.
Here we present you five reasons why you should never eat microwave popcorn.
- It is not organic.
Instant popcorn which may be bought in the supermarket and microwave usually is not organic. More often, it is full with toxins, dangerous chemicals or pesticides. All of the chemicals, which were applied to it, lead to serious diseases such as Alzheimer’s, lung disease and kidney failure.
- The bag is also harmful.
The bag in which the popcorn is packed is found to contain Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). According to a study from UCLA this acid may lead to damages of the liver and destabilization of the immune system.
- It contains vegetable oil.
Vegetable oil on its own it is not dangerous but when it is exposed to heat, it is oxidized and leads to creation of free radicals. As we all know these free radicals lead to appearance of many diseases and premature aging.
- Not even butter is safe.
Butter flavored microwave popcorn is not very safe as we all believe. It contains diacetyl, which is considered a very toxic chemical, commonly damages the lungs of workers in the factories where this kind of popcorn is produced.
- Most of the instant microwave popcorn is GMO.
A study conducted in the USA showed that more than 85% of all popcorn on the market was genetically modified in some stage of its growth or it has been treated with large quantities of chemicals, most commonly toxins.
However, here some good news for you. You do not have to give up popcorn entirely. Still you may buy organic kernels and pop them on the stove in a pot, just add organic palm oil or butter and sea salt. In this way, you can still enjoy popcorn with your favorite movie and be sure that they are 100% safe and natural.
